AJ’s Testimony
My entire life has been surrounded by the local church. By God’s grace, my parents, Jon and Teresa Horton, were able to plant Gospel Light Baptist Church in Malvern, Arkansas, in 2000. It was there I was raised and instructed in the purpose and importance of God’s church. For as long as I can remember, I knew the gospel message: that Christ died for us, was buried, and rose again. I remember, however, the first time the message went passed my ears and smote my heart. As a ten-year-old boy the gospel became real to me, and I knew I needed a Savior. I bowed my head and prayed that God would accept an unworthy sinner. God placed within me at that moment a deep desire to share this news of grace with others. Like I was, there are many in the United Kingdom and across the world that are remarkably familiar with the gospel but have not let it affect their hearts.
As a ten-year-old boy the gospel became real to me, and I knew I needed a Savior.
At the age of sixteen, after wrestling with God for years, I surrendered my life to be a preacher of the gospel! It was a terrifying thought, but one I knew God had asked me to do. I knew I needed some form of training, so I began to pray about Bible colleges. During this time God used certain men to lead me to study at Crown College of the Bible where I enrolled in HVAC/R and Pastoral Theology and graduated with both. The years of college are precious to me for it was in those years that God drew me closer to Himself, led me to my wife, and called us to the United Kingdom.
I remember clearly in September of 2025, when Bethany came to me about her burden from God for the United Kingdom. Because I had not yet been directed in this way, we decided to just take some time to pray about this. One month later at the Temple Baptist Church mission conference, Pastor Derrick Morlan opened the meeting by announcing an opportunity for a church to be planted in Wales. I cannot explain all the feelings and thoughts that went through my head in just seconds, except to say that God grabbed the strings of my heart. The next church service was a sermon from Matthew 28, “Go ye into all the world.” I knew God was telling me to go. When I spoke with Bethany about it, I realized that she still felt strongly that God was leading her to the United Kingdom and had been praying for me all along. As we surrendered to God each day, He continued to provide overwhelming confirmation of His will.
Bethany and I are not going to the United Kingdom because we believe the need is great. While yes, of course, the need for the gospel in the United Kingdom is overwhelmingly significant, that is not the reason we are going. Bethany and I are going to the UK because we know that is where God is leading us. We, like every other believer, have been given the ministry of reconciliation wherever we go (II Corinthians 5:18). Please pray for us as we take our testimonies of God’s grace across the ocean to the souls that are without hope. II Corinthians 4:6, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
